What does a career in sports management involve, and what are the key responsibilities in this field?
What qualifications, degrees, or certifications are necessary to enter the field of sports management?
Sports management is everything in the business of sports, it's all factors involved off the field and really has
no relation to any on-field knowledge; so being a sports person has no relation to succeeding in sports
management. Key responsibilities one may need in the industry are being a good leader, communicator
and most importantly have an immense ability to adapt.
Sports management is a rewarding career that merges a passion for sports with important business and
leadership skills. Success depends on gaining experience, developing technical and soft skills, and staying
current with industry trends. With opportunities in areas like event management and athlete
representation, it offers a fulfilling profession. If you're unsure about your path, consider seeking guidance
from a career counselor.
Anirudh Dhirendra is an ex professional athlete who did his Bachelor's in Science
in Sports Management and Law from the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst. He worked in LA as a sports coach, BusinessAdmin, as well as
Marketing and Sales Executive. He has also volunteered at the 2016 Rio
Olympics in a multi-role position.
Sports management has a lot of options -there are Bachelors and Master's degrees in sports management
itself; if anyone is interested in the physical side of sports, then there are kinesiology and body physiology
degrees as well. This is for people interested in working with sports people to improve their physical
prowess. In terms of certifications, a student interested in entering the field can also get certified in personal
training, strength and conditioning or sports nutrition to add value to their resume.
What skills are most important for success in sports management?
The most important skill in sports management is adaptability. I would also say that anyone who wants to
succeed in this industry has to leave their ego out and have a willingness to do anything, even if it isn't
directly related to their job description. Apart from that, everyone interested in the industry should be well
versed with Microsoft suite and Google drive services.
What are the different career paths within sports management, and how can students choose the right one?
Sports management is probably the broadest term for an industry. Since it's everything business-related,
you can enter marketing, operations, sales, admin, business management, athlete management, and team
management. There is no such thing as picking the right path, it's about picking the right path for you.
Introspect and see which aspect interests you the most and then do your homework as to how the roles in
that specific aspect works for you. Ideally, speaking to the people in the industry is one of the best ways to
get a better understanding.
How can students gain practical experience while studying (e.g., internships, volunteer work, networking)?
You need to be more proactive in getting the ideal practical experiences for yourself. Platforms like
LinkedIn, Indeed, and Monster are excellent for searching for internships. Additionally, attending
networking events related to sports teams can help you build your network and create new opportunities.
Furthermore, reaching out to executives at sports management firms to ask for their insights, is another
valuable way to gain experience.

challenge that the industry is facing and pitch the solution to the professionals, to help you stand out to
them. Be in and around local sports events as well, and speak to the organizers and operations teams that
are involved, to see if they may have opportunities for you.
What are the best networking strategies to build connections and find job opportunities in sports management?

What are the biggest challenges faced by professionals in sports management?
The biggest challenge for anyone in the industry is how traditional the industry is. There is the expectation
for you to “grind and grind and show that you are grinding away for the greater good to succeed”. Ideally,
you need to work smart, and understand where you should put in your efforts vs. just trying to please the
people you are working for. Being creative is the way to bypass the challenge of being overworked and
underpaid. The other challenge is how sports are viewed in the country. As of now, there is still a belief that
one cannot really succeed in a career in the sports industry, but understanding that you have many options
that you can try and explore will help you ignore the negativity.
How has technology influenced the sports management industry, and what trends should students be aware of?
The biggest technological influence now is AI. Being well versed in AI tools and knowing what is AI
generated vs. original information is very important. False information is shared a lot and combating that
will be a huge necessity for anyone entering the industry. This can only be done if you know how to scour
through social media platforms and gauge what's correct and wants wrong.
What are some common mistakes young professionals make when starting in this field, and how can they
avoid them?
The most common mistake made by people who join the industry is that they try to stick to one path too
quickly and then burn out if it doesn't align with their interests and needs. Giving yourself chances to try
out different spaces in the industry will make it easier for you to explore the different facets of the industry
and will give you a sense of confidence to tackle anything.
The other mistake made is getting caught up in the glitz and glamour of the sports world; this creates a
huge distraction and causes wrong decisions to be made towards a successful future. The best way to
avoid these mistakes is to be true to who you are and back your choices, regardless of what others may
say.
What advice would you give to students who are passionate about sports but unsure how to break into the
business side of it?
The first thing you must ask yourself is - are you interested in the business side of sports or just passionate
about sports. Because the business end of sports is very different and if you do not enjoy those
technicalities, you will not enjoy any sphere in the industry. I would suggest trying to first understand and
explore as to what goes into being a part of the industry and if that appeals to you, trying an internship or
volunteer job, to get an actual feel and hands-on experience of the field. .

Would you recommend this career to young aspirants. What are the pros and cons of taking up this career?
I would only recommend a career in sports management to those who are genuinely interested in the
business of sports. It's important to understand that your personal emotions for sports have little value in
the industry. Instead, the focus is on the passion for building the industry, which may or may not
acknowledge your contributions.
The advantages of pursuing a career in sports management include constant learning opportunities and a
feeling of growth, as there is never a sense of stagnation. Additionally, there is an element of glitz and
glamour associated with being part of the sports industry, although I personally don't place much
importance on that aspect. There are also many career opportunities available, especially in India
On the downside, you may find yourself working hard without receiving
much recognition for your efforts. The industry can be quite unforgiving, and
having tough skin is essential. It can also lead to confusion about your
passions and desires, so a high level of self-awareness is necessary to remain
true to who you are.
